The Business of Buying Time by Johnny Arnez: book cover with a red Ferrari and a clock

What you’ll learn

From income to time, in the right order

A real-world guide from entrepreneur and investor Johnny Arnez, who built multiple businesses, made expensive mistakes, and learned that true wealth is not about what you buy, but about the time it gives you back.

I

Grow your income

Whatever your income is, learn to create a gap between what you earn and what you spend. Then protect that surplus and build reserves.

II

Build assets

Turn the surplus into assets that can grow: real estate, investments, and a business that does not need you for every decision.

III

Create freedom

Let your assets produce cash flow, and work out your own Freedom Number: what it takes to sustain the life you want.

IV

Buy back your time

Use that cash flow to reclaim the one asset you cannot accumulate: time with the people who matter to you.

Income creates surplus. Surplus buys assets. Assets create cash flow. And cash flow can eventually buy back your time.

Inside the book

Real stories, real numbers

Through personal stories—including the Ferrari F430 Spider, real estate deals, business lessons, and hard-earned investing insights—Johnny shares a practical framework for turning income into assets, assets into freedom, and freedom into time.

From the book

The Ferrari F430 Spider

Bought in 2006 for about $320,000, sold for around $200,000, and compared with what the same money might have grown into in the S&P 500. Not a lesson against enjoyment: a lesson about order.

From the book

The townhouse at twenty-four

He rented out the upstairs rooms and lived in the basement. Rent covered the mortgage, but without a cash reserve every vacancy was stressful.

From the book

The 19 percent promise

A private investment projecting a 19 percent return failed to deliver, and taught him to ask about management, liquidity and the downside first.

From the book

Wealth on a Salary

Not only for business owners: how employees and professionals build security through saving, homeownership, less debt and investing.

Reader reviews

What readers are saying

“Every business owner should read this.”

“As a small-business owner, I connected with the author’s experiences. The lessons about delegating, investing in assets, and not letting your business control your life really hit home. This is the kind of advice you appreciate even more when it comes from someone who has actually lived it.”

Robert

“The Ferrari story alone is worth reading.”

“The story about the Ferrari was one of my favorite parts of the book. It shows how even successful people can make expensive financial decisions and learn from them. I appreciated the author’s willingness to share his mistakes instead of pretending every investment was a success.”

Jennifer

“Financial freedom explained in simple language.”

“What I liked most was how easy the book was to understand. The author explains the connection between income, assets, cash flow, and freedom without making things unnecessarily complicated. It’s a useful read whether you own a business or work for someone else.”

David

“A book that makes you reconsider your priorities.”

“I expected another book about making money, but this one goes further. The message about spending more time with family and not postponing your life until retirement really stayed with me. It combines financial lessons with something much more personal.”

Patricia

“Real experience, real mistakes, real lessons.”

“I enjoyed how Johnny Arnez shares both his successes and setbacks. The stories about entrepreneurship, real estate, and investing give the book credibility. His message is clear: money should eventually work for you, so you don’t have to spend your entire life working for money.”

I don’t write as someone who made every decision correctly. I write as someone who made the decisions, lived with the results, learned from them, and wants to pass those lessons forward.

How the book begins

The opening scene captures the book’s emotional center. Johnny leaves his son Adrian’s soccer game at halftime to help a customer at Electronic Plus, even as Adrian asks him to stay.
